Get email notification when updates available yum

CentOS 6

CentOS 6 do not use yum-updatesd, instead use yum-cron

yum -y install yum-cron
chkconfig yum-cron on
service yum-cron start

Edit /etc/sysconfig/yum-cron to configure yum-cron.

vi /etc/sysconfig/yum-cron

Find

MAILTO=

Replace With

[email protected]


CentOS 5

To get email alerts when new updates available in yum, do following. When you get alter, login to server and run "yum update"

vi /etc/yum/yum-updatesd.conf

Find

emit_via = dbus

Replace with

emit_via = email
email_to = [email protected]
email_from = [email protected]

After editing, content look like

[main]
# how often to check for new updates (in seconds)
run_interval = 3600
# how often to allow checking on request (in seconds)
updaterefresh = 600

# how to send notifications (valid: dbus, email, syslog)
emit_via = email
email_to = [email protected]
email_from = [email protected]

# should we listen via dbus to give out update information/check for
# new updates
dbus_listener = yes

# automatically install updates
do_update = no
# automatically download updates
do_download = no
# automatically download deps of updates
do_download_deps = no


Restart yum-updatesd

service yum-updatesd restart
